SAND FILTERS

Sand filters for Aquaculture filtration applications have long been used to improve water quality, primarily as mechanical filter but also as biological filter and chemical filtration contact tanks (such as carbon). They are economical to purchase, easy to operate, and can be used in a wide variety of applications. They have however, in the past, been limited to lightly loaded applications due to the media becoming quickly fouled due to biofilm and high levels of waste in aquaculture system not commonly encountered in pools.

Pure Aquatics has a wide range of media types to apply in different applications to help to ease the loading on sand filters and increase the effectiveness of filtration in aquaculture applications. From our experience in the aquaculture field and in conjunction with our suppliers, we have also developed a range of different hydraulic loading rates for various applications and media to ensure the most efficient and trouble free operation of your sand filter.

Multicyclone

MULTICYCLONE CENTRIFUGAL FILTER

THE MULTICYCLONE

Waterco’s award-winning MultiCyclone technology uses the most advanced hydro cyclone technology to ensure high water quality and clarity.

An Australian innovation, the MultiCyclone is a pre-filtration device, which is designed to capture up to 80 per cent of the incoming dirt load prior to the main filter, which then significantly reduces filter maintenance and saves backwash water – not to mention improving water circulation. Waterco’s award winning MultiCyclone is a brilliant pre-filtration device that works on the basis of centrifugal water filtration and is designed with no moving parts and no filter media to clean or replace.

  • Ease filter workload
Multicyclone pre-filters up to 80% of the filter’s incoming dirt load easing the workload of the filter. As the multicyclone intercepts more and more dirt, the flow rate remains unchanged.

  • Improving pool water circulation

  • Enhancing the performance of the automatic pool cleaner and in floor cleaning system

  • Allowing effective vacuuming without burdening the filter

  • Minimising filter maintenance and saving water

  • Minimise backwash frequency
The installation of a multicyclone as a pre-filter to a sand filter can reduce its backwash frequency to once per year, resulting in a saving of up to 7,000 litres of water per year for an average domestic sized swimming pool.

  • Minimise cartridge cleaning and replacement
The installation of a multicyclone as a pre-filter to a cartridge filter can reduce filter cartridge cleaning and replacement to once per season and even up to once per year, depending on the size of the cartridge filter.

  • Simple maintenance
The multicyclone is easily cleaned by opening its purge valve. Only 15 litres of water is discharged to cleanse the multicyclone.Waterco stocks a range multicyclones, all of which come with a two year warranty.

MICRON MEDIA FILTERS

Micron fibreglass filters embody the latest in fibreglass winding technology. Micron fibreglass vessels consist of an inner shell of fiberglass reinforced polyester resin wound over with fibreglass filament. Waterco’s digitally controlled filament winding machine faultlessly winds continuous strands of high quality fibreglass filament under controlled tension filament to create a seamless one-piece vessel with refined consistency and superior quality. There are no welds or seams or special tank linings which can corrode or electrolyse.

Micron filters operate on the basis of “depth filtration”; dirt is driven through the filter bed and trapped in minute spaces between the particles of filter media allowing the cleansed water to pass through the filter’s laterals and exit via the filter’s Multiport valve.

The effectiveness and efficiency of the filter is impaired by excessive build up of debris, clogging the media, which will result in pressure build up and poor circulation. Cleaning the filter simply requires turning the filter’s Multiport lever from the “filter” position to the “backwash” position, which reverses the flow of water in the filter, flushing the filter bed.

Sand Filter Media

Sand filters should be more accurately called media filters. The range of sand filter media available is vast, with many different media’s available to suit various applications.

Sand filter media such as zeolite, sand, crushed glass, AFM, Glass Pearls, activated carbon, anthracite, various resins for removal of heavy metals and hardness from water, specialty sinking plastic media and many other medias can be used in sand filters.

SAND

Filter sand is naturally occurring, graded and washed silicon dioxide. It is an inert media, hard, durable and has a long service life.

In our experience, sand is suited to only very lightly loaded applications, as the filter bed is prone to caking and blocking, resulting in channeling and the filter bed not be able to be backwashed effectively. It also has limited depth filtration, minimising its ability to hold more waste, resulting in more frequent backwashing.

Available in 0.6-1.2mm size for filtration in sand filters.

GLASS PEARLS

One of the newest filter media on the market, Glass Pearls offer a filtration level comparable to DE. Made from pure glass, the Glass Pearls filter out anything larger than 3 microns, giving you superior quality water.

Pros:

  • Small effective size of only 0.6mm to 0.8mm. Its narrow particle size range allows very effective in-depth filtration
  • Spherical shape of beads means less friction levels inside the filter and therefore requiring only 20% of the water you would use to backwash a sand filter
  • Chemically inert, safe, smooth and high purity

Cons:

  • Still requires backwashing occasionally
  • More costly than sand and Zeoplus
Glass Pearl

ECOPURE CRUSHED GLASS

Ecopure crushed glass sand filter media is manufactured from recycled glass. Its is environmentally friendly and a viable alternative to sand and offers finer filtration when compared to sand.

Ecopure

ZEOPLUS ZEOLITE

Zeoplus is an incredibly hard zeolite (a naturally occurring mineral). It can remove ammonia from both fresh and saltwater, as well as some other dissolved pollutants as well. Zeolite offers great depth filtration and is a viable option for replacing sand in sand filters for both removal rate and dirt holding capacity. Zeoplus can filter approximately 90% of the particles in water down to 10 microns per pass.

Zeoplus

ACTIVATED CARBON

Pure Aquatics offers two types of activated carbon.

For Chlorine and ozone removal we recommend our Coconut carbon (available in a range of seive sizes) as the pore distribution is more effective for these types of ions (almost exclusively microporous).

For organics and tannin/colour removal we recommend a coal based activated carbon that has both micropore and mesopore structured pores.

K1-Closeup

K+ Advanced Sinking Filter Media

Plastic media, for use in biological Pond filters – specifically in moving bed bio reactors, was pioneered by Evolution Aqua, some 20 years ago. In recent years, other plastic media have come onto the market, usually with the aim of trying to get more and more surface area. However, one drawback to using plastic media has always been the time it takes to establish a stable biofilm – essential for good filtration.

After many years of research, Evolution Aqua have now developed a new media that not only gives class leading surface area, but also overcomes the problem of long maturation times.

ADVANCED FILTER MEDIA

K+Media is designed and manufactured in the UK by Evolution Aqua. This advanced media, with its innovative design, and class leading surface area provides enhanced biological and mechanical filtration. As Evolution Aqua extrude the K+Media, Minerals and Enzymes are added to the raw material. The result of this process, unique to Evolution Aqua, is a filtration media that not only outperforms most of its competitors due to its large protected surface area, but also answers the problem of how to speed up the time taken to mature your filter.

ALL THE BENEFITS OF K1… PLUS:

  • Class leading total surface area 1350m2 per m3
  • Vast protected surface area 1025 m2 per m3
  • Filters mature faster with k+media
  • Minerals, magnesium, calcium, salt and enzymes incorporated into each piece
  • During extrusion process
  • Design and structure of k+media allows a stable bio-film to form
  • Microscopic organisms such as rotifers and vorticella spp. Thrive in “quiet zones”
  • Exceptional solids removal thanks to efficient design
  • Reduced energy consumption, less back pressure on pumps
  • Available as sinking version in 50 litre bags through to 2.5m3 bulk bags
